You would think that Lady Gaga is pretty much unshockable. But the singer could not even hide behind a Poker Face when she was asked outright in a TV interview: ‘Have you had sex with women?’
Gaga seemed stunned when the normally demure US interviewer Barbara Walters posed the question.
‘Um, uh... well, I... my goodness!’ she stammered. Finally she said: ‘I have had sexual relationships with women, yes.’ Asked if she was bisexual, the 23-year-old said: ‘Well I do like women. But I’ve only been in love with men, I’ve never been in love with a woman.’
The biggest misconception about her ‘is that I’m artificial and attention seeking’, she said. ‘The truth is that every bit of me is devoted to love and art. I aspire to try to be a teacher to my young fans who feel just like I felt when I was younger.
‘I felt like a freak. I want to free them of their fears and make them feel like they can create their own space in the world.’
After the interview for a programme called The 10 Most Influential People Of The Year, Walters told Gaga: ‘You are not at all what I expected – you are much more.’
Lady Gaga stuttered with embarrassment after being asked outright: “Have you had sex with women?”
Gaga seemed stunned by the blunt question while being interviewed as part of a TV special about The 10 Most Influential People of the Year.
And the normally outlandish star, dressed unusually demure and without her usual sunglasses, was lost for words and clearly embarrassed. “Um, uh... well I... my goodness!,” she stuttered at interviewer Barbara Walters, usually known for her easy-going, conservative questioning style.
Finally, the star admitted: “I have certainly had sexual relationships with women, yes.” Asked if she was bisexual, she said: “Well I do like women. But I’ve only been in love with men, I’ve never been in love with a woman.” Walters had introduced the singer as being “outrageous, outlandish and out of this world”.
But she insisted: “When I met her the most shocking thing about her was that she was not shocking at all.” Asked to describe herself, Lady Gaga said: “Well I am a songwriter, a performance artist. I am a daughter and a sister. But I am also an Italian girl from New York.”
Of her childhood, she said: “I had this dream and I really wanted to be a star.
“I was almost a monster in the way that I was fearless in my ambitions.
“It wasn’t really so easy for my dad, especially in the beginning. We didn’t talk for months after the first time he saw me play. My mother told me that he was afraid that I was like mentally unstable.”
She said that the biggest misconception about her is “that I am artificial and attention seeking”.
“The truth is that every bit of me is devoted to love and art,” she said.
“I aspire to try to be a teacher to my young fans who feel just like I felt when I was younger.
“I felt like a freak. I want to liberate them. I want to free them of their fears and make them feel like they can create their own space in the world.”
After their interview, Walters admitted: “You are not at all what I expected - you are much more.”
